How do live captioning and/or transcription work? The captioner or transcriber, typically working remotely, will listen in to the meeting or event through a platform such as Zoom, Teams, Skype, or another platform. Text/captions will stream back to the user either through the platform or on a web-based link in real time with virtually no delay. Captions/text can be viewed on a large screen in the venue or on a user's laptop, tablet or mobile device, or both, depending on your requirements.

How are CART and TypeWell different from Automatic Speech Recognition?CART captioning is different from automatic speech recognition (ASR), which is often used in media, social channels, and videoconferencing apps. ASR can't provide the same level of accuracy as CART captioning for accessibility purposes. See our page about why human captions are better than ASR

What are the differences between CART and TypeWell?CART captioning is a word-for-word (verbatim) service. CART writers are trained to write up to 260 words per minute with 98% accuracy. The words appear almost instantaneously. TypeWell transcribers provide a meaning-for-meaning translation of the spoken text. They typically listen to the thought or phrase of the speaker before they start transcribing, much like an ASL interpreter. The transcriber conveys the entire meaning of the speaker, but makes the text more concise, and leaves out meaningless words, repetitive phrases, etc.
